Fernando Maurício's House

When the parish council of Santa Maria Maior decided to establish “Casa Fernando Maurício” the underlying concept was to interpret the feelings and desire of the people of Mouraria – his parish – and of the “Fado people” who see him as the “King of Fado”. 

It is tribute to the memory and art of this grand Fado singer and to all men and women – composers, poets, lyric writers – who have built this musical genre that is so important to our popular culture, and that has now become Intangible Heritage of Mankind.

Would have Fado gained such a national and worldwide recognition without the contribution of this army of authors and of singers of which Maurício was “King”? We really doubt it.

This museum was established thanks to the generosity of a great friend and admirer of Fernando Maurício, António Piedade who passed away quite recently. It was his idea to donate his lifelong collection of Maurício’s items, and we promised him we would create this museum. This “Casa Fernando Maurício” is also dedicated to the memory of this great friend of Fernando Maurício and of Fado.
